To mark the centennial anniversary of Yangon University which will fall on 1 December 2020, a cash donation ceremony of Commanderin-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the alumnus of Law Major of Yangon University, Daw Kyu Kyu Hla, wife of the Senior General, the alumna of Myanmar Major and senior military officers of the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and wives, the alumni of Yangon University took place at the meeting hall of the Convocation Hall of Yangon University this morning.
Present at the ceremony were Lt-Gen Thet Pon of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army), Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Nyunt Win Swe, Rector of Yangon University Dr Pho Kaung, Pro-Rector Dr Nilar Aung and Pro-Rector Dr Thaung Htaik.
First, Lt-Gen Thet Pon made an opening speech. Lt-Gen Thet Pon and the commander handed over Ks-3 million donated by the Senior General and wife and more than Ks-20 million by senior military officers of the Tatmadaw (Army,Navy and Air) and their wives. TheRector of Yangon University and party accepted the cash donations and returned certificates of honour.
The Rector spoke words of thanks. Lt-Gen Thet Pon and the commander presented gifts, foodstuffs produced by Tatmadaw factories and face masks for prevention of COVID-19 to the Rector and party.
Yangon University, the pioneer of Myanmar education arena and origin of universities and degree colleges across Myanmar, was established on 1 December 1920.
Now, the university turns 100 years on 1 December 2020. Yangon University turned out nation-building leaders and many educated youths such as national leader General Aung San, veteran writers Zawgyi, Sayagyi Min Thu Wun, Tekkatho Phone Naing, Education Commissioner U Kaung, historian Dr Than Tun and Myanmar language expert Dr Hla Pe as well as leaders of the global people such as U Thant, Secretary General of the United Nations.
