In honour of the 77th Anniversary Union Day, a ceremony to inaugurate a new seven-storey building of Yangon General Hospital of the Ministry of Health was held at the hospital on Anawrahta Street, Latha Township, Yangon Region, this morning, attended by Chairman of State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
Also present at the ceremony together with the Senior General were SAC Joint Secretary LtGen Ye Win Oo, SAC members Lt-Gen Nyo Saw, Mahn Nyein Maung, and Dr Ba Shwe, union ministers U Hla Moe, U Khin Maung Yi, U Myo Thant and Dr Thet Khaing Win, Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein, senior military officers from the Office of the Commander-inChief, the Yangon Command commander, officials, medical experts, heads of department and guests.
The Senior General and party arrived at the venue and were welcomed by officials and health staff. Young students also welcomed them with a music band and pom pom dance. At the first part of the ceremony, Union Minister for Health Dr Thet Khaing Win, Union Minister for Construction U Myo Thant and the chief minister formally opened the building. Music band played music and students performed pom pom dance.
The Senior General unveiled the plaque of the building by pushing a button. He then presented honourary cash award to the students of the music band and dance troupe and posed for documentary photo together with attendees.

At the second part of the ceremony, the Senior General and party were conducted around the Department of Radiology and Imaging Technology, laboratories, blood disorder treatment ward, and medical treatment wards of the building.
The third part of the ceremony was held at the meeting hall of the building. Only the persons, fit and healthy, can pursue education well and dutifully serve the country. Hence, the government adopted public health policies and the goal, “Promotion of an inclusive health and sports sector for health, fitness and longevity of the entire nation.”
Since its assumption of the duties in February 2021, the SAC has been building rural clinics, staff quarters. It built new treatment wards at Magway, Monywa, Pyay, Hpa-an, Pathein, Sao San Tun people’s hospitals in regions and states, opened new wards in Waibagi Special Hospital and Orthopedic Hospital (Yangon), new twostorey buildings at 50-bed township hospitals, new academic buildings at medical universities and nurses universities, and branches to extend food and drug management functions.
All the government’s endeavours to promote the public health sector will be in vain if the people are facing difficulties and obstacles to enjoy the fruits. Hence, all the stakeholders should be wise to do the right thing if they have the real wish to benefit the people.
Located in Yangon, the commercial capital of the country, the Yangon General Hospital is the largest of its kind in Myanmar. So, it is a facility the public have relied on for health and education purposes throughout the successive periods. It was built as a 483-bed hospital in 1873, and was extended throughout the successive eras till it became a 2000-bed hospital in 2016. It is the hospital that is benefiting the people. The aim of the new building was to ensure convenience for the patients of the 2000-bed hospital and to provide international level treatment.
Construction of the new building started in 2015, but there were delays due to certain reasons. SAC continued the construction of the building till its completion to open an excellent public healthcare facility. Hence, the opening ceremony could be held today in honour of the 77th Anniversary Union Day. The Public Works of the Ministry of Construction that strove for the earliest completion of the building that was facing delays for various reasons and the officials of the departments that willingly rendered assistance with might and main truly deserve honour.
The State had allotted a large amount of money from its budget to erect the building that is installed with modern diagnosis equipment, laboratories, x-ray and imaging department, hematology department, bone marrow transplant and treatment facilities. Hence, the people will be able to receive modern medical treatment that meets international standards.
All health-related staff and departments are profoundly urged to join hands with goodwill, noble mind, full metta and loving kindness for increasing the public life expectancy, and the availability of cost-effective quality healthcare for every individual.
A video clip on the building was shown. The union construction minister then handed over the related documents to the union health minister.
The union health minister spoke words of thanks and presented a commemorative gift to the Senior General.
The Senior General and party and attendees enjoyed a tea party held in honour of the opening ceremony.
