Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, accompanied by entourage members, the chief minister of Yangon Region, the commander of Yangon Command, Mayor U Bo Htay and responsible officials, inspected the preparation for resumption of operations at Gyaung Waing dockyard in Gyaung Waing Village in Kyimyindine Township in Yangon this morning.
First, the Senior General heard reports on salient points about Gyaung Waing dock and preparations for resumption of operations there presented by Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr Aung Gyi and officials at the parlour of the dock. After hearing the reports, the Senior General said it has been a long time since operations of the dock were suspended and it is necessary to use it beneficially by renovating it to meet modern standards and acquiring machinery.
The Senior General asked the official to take measures to build and repair ships as well as to construct staff quarters and other buildings to facilitate administrative tasks and gave necessary instructions.
Then, the Senior General and party inspected the dock facility, the dry dock, slipways, the gate and the jetty and gave necessary instructions to resume operations of the dockyard concerning the report of officials.
The dockyard was constructed in 1981-1982 and used as a dry dock in 1986. In 1999, repair tasks were carried out for 49 ships at the dockyard and its operations were suspended.
As its operations have been suspended for 36 years and more damage and losses will be caused if its operations are suspended for a long time.
Therefore, relevant government departments and authorities are required to take necessary measures to resume operations at the dockyard.
