Regarding the severe earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, causing significant damage and losses within the country, Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing spoke by phone this evening with Prime Minister of Pakistan H.E. Mr. Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif to discuss potential assistance.
During the conversation, the Pakistani Prime Minister first expressed deep sorrow over the devastating earthquake in Myanmar, stating that he and the people of Pakistan share in the grief of the Myanmar people.
He conveyed his wishes for a swift recovery and reconstruction in Myanmar. He further announced that the Pakistani government and its people would soon send 35 tons of humanitarian aid via two flights, followed by an additional 17 tons of relief supplies. He assured that Pakistan stands ready to provide further assistance if needed and prayed for Myanmar to overcome this difficult period.
He emphasized the strong, friendly relations between the two nations and expressed a desire to enhance future cooperation.
In response, the Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the supportive call and pledged assistance from a friendly nation. He affirmed that Myanmar would continue bilateral cooperation based on opportunities. He also thanked Pakistan for its condolences, humanitarian aid, and relief supplies. The Senior General noted that, as of today, the earthquake had resulted in 2,065 fatalities, over 3,900 injuries, and around 270 missing persons.
He clarified that while Friday (March 28) is a day of worship in Islam, reports of 700 worshippers dying in mosques were inaccurate, with the actual number being around 500. Rescue operations are ongoing, with bodies recovered and search efforts continuing.
The Pakistani Prime Minister acknowledged Myanmar’s continuous rescue efforts and prayed for the swift recovery of the affected people. He commended Myanmar’s response to the crisis and assured that Pakistan remains ready to provide further assistance if needed. He confirmed that the relief supplies, medicines, and ready-to-eat food sent by Pakistan would reach Myanmar within 24 hours.
